Road-to-Nowhere Settlement Still Undecided
July 27, 2008
For those that don’t know, the North Shore road along Fontana Lake in Swain county is simultaneously the coolest and most depressing stretch of road in America. It dead ends, literally, in the middle of nowhere. A promise by the feds to build a road, which would allow displaced area residents to visit family gravesites after the completion of Fontana dam, was eventually broken. A small section of the promised road was completed and then abandoned on the other side of a long tunnel. I love traveling the road on weekdays because you’re literally by yourself without another person for miles. My grandmother, who was among the residents forced to leave by the g-men, is still pissed about it. Asheville Citizen-Times has more.
